Echunga Wine District

The Echunga Wine District in the Adelaide Hills Wine Region. near the towns of Echunga, Mount Barker, Macclesfield, Meadows, Green Hills, Wistow, and Strathalbyn,.Echunga is a quiet village near remnant of the historic gold mining that occurred in the area. Located about 35 km south-east of Adelaide, Echunga is in the heart if the Adelaide Hills and is situated only 8 km from Hahndorf. Gold was discovered at Jupiter Creek in 1852. Local attraction sin the area include: # Hagen Arms # Jupiter Gold Diggings - The diggings themselves are a short walk from the car park and you can fossick on the diggings debris piles. John Hagen purchased land and built the hotel and tried to create a model village with wheat fields, dairy herds and a vineyard at Echunga. In 1845 the wine produced from the vineyard was perhaps the first exported wine from South Australia. An Echunga hock was served to Queen Victoria in 1845. There is also a local guided walking tour of the area.
