The Coonawarra Wine Region in the Limestone Coast Zone includes wineries near the townships
Coonawarra and Penola. The Limestone Coast has a Mediterranean style climate with cool,
wet winters and long, mild, dry summers. Generally rainfall tends to decrease northwards and
away from the coast, from an annual maximum of 850 mm near Mount Burr to 450 mm near Keith and
Bordertown. Coonawarra has been a inspiration for the Australian wine industry for over 120 years, exporting fortifieds in the late 1800s and providing the crux for many of our most famous wines in the 30s, 40s and 50s long before its global reputation as a fine wine region was established. The Coonawarra and Penola area boomed in the period from 1960-1990, justifiably, claiming the mantra as Australia’s leading Cabernet Sauvignon region. It remains one of only three or four Australian geographic wine names that is easily recalled by consumers worldwide.
Coonawarra is region that has a singular story based on a unique cigar-shaped strip of terra rossa soil over limestone. Terra rossa (Italian for red soil) is a type of red clay produced by the weathering of limestone over many thousands of years and coloured by iron oxide. Free draining yet complemented by the water holding capacity of the limestone, the unique soil influences vine vigour, ripeness and wine flavour.
The Limestone Coast Wine Region includes nine districts : Padthaway ; Robe ; Wrattonbully ; Kingston SE ; Mount Gambier ; Mount Benson ; Lucindale ; Bordertown Coonawarra

In 1975 the Hollick's commenced developing this vineyard, progressively planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc. Ian Hollick's involvement with viticulture goes way back to his childhood in Mildura as the son of a soldier settler fruit blocker.
