The Summit Wine District

The renowned area of The Summit lies in the heart of the Granite Belt`s fruit growing and grape growing region. The Summit has the reputation is being one of the coldest places in Queensland and it sometimes snows in The Summit and in the nearby towns of Thulimba, Eukey, Applethorpe and Stanthorpe. Last frosts are a hazard for the grape growers. Apart from the fruit and wines there are also has many other popular attractions such as the stunning Granite Belt Maze and many art and craft outlets, as well a stunning accommodation, cafes, fresh food outlets, cellar doors. The Summit, lies close to the border with New South Wales and the neighbouring town of Tenterfield, where there are more wineries. Many multi-award winning wineries are located in the hills around Summit offering premium boutique Queensland Wines, and so a wine tour is a must. Two wineries with outstanding facilities are Summit Estate vineyard and Boireann. At Thulimbah, there are many apple and stone fruit farms and it the home to the famous tourist attraction known as the `Big Apple`. One of the best ways to enjoy the food, wines and attractions of the area is with a small group of friends in the luxury of a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle on one of the many wine tours available in the area. The smaller numbers allow you to tailor your tour specially to your particular interests. The Granite Belt wineries are small to medium in size, with friendly owners, vineyard managers who will welcome you to the family winery and share their passion for producing high quality wines in this unique area. Most are owned by families and they offer country hospitality and excellent service. Many of the wineries have restaurants, cafes and shops that stock other local produce such as fruit, olives, arts and crafts. The Granite Belt`s region wines have a reputation for their crisp whites wines and fine, full-bodied reds. The major varieties grown are Shiraz, Chardonnay, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. Many of the wineries are experimenting with new varieties such as Italian species and they are also exploring various growing, harvesting and wine processing techniques suited to the unique climate and terroir of the area.
