The region lies inland from the coast and adjoins the Victorian border. Vine were first planted in the region in 1890.The success of the Coonawarra vineyards relies not on the region's proximity to major markets, as it is rather isolated, but to its unique geological, soils and climatic conditions that have proven to be ideal for growing grapes and producing outstanding wines.
