Northern Rivers NSW Wine Region

The Northern Rivers Wine Region is situated on the far North coast of New South Wales, adjoining the Queensland Border and extends from Tweed Heads and the Queensland border in the North south to Yamba, Maclean and Iluka. The area boasts beautiful pristine beaches and a spectacular coastline and has an Australian and International as a holiday destination. The area has a thriving alternative lifestyle way of life and a plethora of agricultural, cultural, arts and craft, restaurants, cafes, markets and a huge array of attractions and activities. The area has the 2nd biggest extinct volcano in the world and remnant patches of the 'big scrub' natural rainforest. The area has an humid sub-tropical climate with mild winters and no frosts ideal for an outdoor lifestyle. It is generally too humid and warm for grape growing, but a number of local growers have tried. The tactic appears to be to get the vine suppliers to provide Shiraz and other varieties with a 'slow me down' root stock, otherwise the vines grow too vigorously and will not flower and produce fruit. Visitors flock to the area for its fantastic array of beautiful rainforests, pristine surfing beaches, delightful coast with spectacular rugged headlands and quiet sheltered bays, and the vast range of holiday and recreational activities and wonderful recreational facilities. The area has wonderful range of ecotours and other day-trip, weekend and regional tours to enable visitors to enjoy the delights of the area. The region's mix of cultures and alternative lifestyles has generated an exciting and vibrant regional community, with thriving markets, entertainment, festivals and markets. Inland from the coast is a rich and diverse agricultural area growing crops such as macadamia nuts, coffee, tea, tea-tree products, sugar cane and cattle grazing. The Northern Rivers region includes the following coastal towns: Ballina, Byron Bay, Brunswick Heads, Yamba, Maclean, Iluka, Cabarita Beach, East Ballina, Lennox Head, Pottsville Beach, Evans Head, Kingscliff, Ocean Shores, Tweed Heads, Wategos Beach. The hinterland towns include: Lismore, Nimbin, Kyogle, Casino, Murwillumba, Woodenbong, The Channon, Mullumbimby, Bangalow. You can travel about 2 hours west to visit the wine regions of New England and the Granite Belt Region in Southern Queensland. There are a number of fledgling wineries in the area and several growers produce fruit wines. There are also many wineries in the North Coast Wine Region to the south in the area around Coffs Harbour and Bellingen.

The Northern Rivers Region includes seven districts : Byron Bay ; Grafton ; Kyogle ; Lismore ; Maclean ; Murwillumbah ; Tweed Heads
