Hastings Wine Region, NSW

The Hastings River Wine Region is a small region on the Mid-North Coast of New South Wales, which is famous for its extensive vineyards of the uncommon French hybrid variety known as Chambourcin. The other varieties that perform well area Chardonnay and Semillon which both show bountiful and rich flavour. The region has two rivers flowing through it - the Hastings and the Wilson, flow through the Hastings River region. The region has a maritime, warm sub-tropical climate, with high humidity and rainfall during the summer months. There are two major districts - one in the coastal area east of the Pacific Highway near the major service centre and tourist destination of Port Macquarie and the other west of the highway near the inland rural centre of Wauchope. Vines were first planted in the region in the 1860s but the modern era really began in the 1980s when the pioneering Cassegrain families began the revival of the wine industry in the Region. The Cassegrain families showed great innovation in the use of the fungus resistant Chambourcin grape variety as well as crafting wines from Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Semillon. The high humidity and warmth of the local climate presents special challenges for grape growers and wine producers. Harvest time is in late January to early March.
