Echuca Wine District

The Echuca Wine District is located in the irrigated agricultural and pastoral area on the southern bank of the Murray River in Victoria, centred on the town ship of Echuca Just across the river in New South Wales is the twin township of Moama. Echuca developed as a busy inland port for the paddle steamers that carried cargo along the Murray and Darling River before the development of the railways. The main industries for the modern township of Echuca are agriculture, tourism and of course wineries. Echuca still has several operational paddle steamers which are a popular tourist attraction based on the Port Of Echuca tourist centre. This includes part of the original river-red gum wharf. Echuca has a warm climate and the Murray River is the main focus for recreation and tourist activities which include: bushwalking, swimming, boating and fishing being the most popular activities. The river is also a popular spot for houseboats, which provide the perfect way to experience life on the river and enjoys the scenery and wildlife. There is a range of wineries with cellar doors on both side of the river.

There are two districts in this region: The Echuca District in Victoria, and the Moama District across the river in New South Wales.
