Cowra Wine Region, NSW

Cowra is located on the Lachlan River, about 300m above sea-level and 300 km west of Sydney. The Cowra Wine Region includes over 40 vineyards, covering 1,250 square kilometres of the beautiful Lachlan Valley. It includes areas near Cowra, Billimari and Canowindra. The region is characterised by warm days, cool nights and dry late summers. These are the perfect conditions for ripening wine grapes and this has made the area famous for its array of boutique wineries. It was a classy Chardonnay that first established Cowra as a quality grape-growing region. Today, Chardonnay and Shiraz are the premier varieties, but many other varieties are also featured. The vignerons work together, sharing their knowledge and experience to ensure that the region continues to strive for excellence. Cowra is already home to four organic vineyards, with an aim of increasing this number in the coming years.

Cowra major tourist and commercial centre for major local industries including: vegetable growing, livestock, sheep and wool, wool scouring, vineyards, furniture making, wineries and tourism. Cowra is famous for its outstanding historical, wine, tourism facilities and natural attractions, which include the spectacular Japanese Cultural Centre and Garden, restaurants and cafes, wineries, art galleries, craft shops, produce outlets and horse riding. The renowned Cowra Breakout of 1944, when Japanese prisoners of war tried to escape from a local prison camp during World War II, led to Cowra`s association with Japan and the annual Festival of Understanding. The region is a growing reputation for its unque wine and fine food. The nearby town of Canowindra, is famous as the hot-air ballooning capital of Australia, has a Heritage-listed buildings, excellent wineries, fine olive groves and orchards. The Age of Fishes Museum is well worth a visit to see the displays of 360 million-year-old fish fossils. Regular events include: # The Festival of Understanding (March) # Cowra Wine Show (July) # Cherry Blossom Festival (September) # Cork and Fork (November).
