King Valley Wine Region

The King Valley is located at the foothills of the Great Dividing Range in North East Victoria near the townships of Wangaratta, Oxley, Milawa, Markwood, Greta, Moyhu, Meadow Creek, Whitfield, and Whitlands,. Abundant water and rich soils provide ideal conditions for agriculture and King Valley is one of the largest cool climate grape growing areas in Victoria, supplying grapes to adjoining regions. The region has two distinct climates- the valley proper surrounding Oxley and Milawa is at an elevation of 600-800 m. The area around Whitfield and Cheshunt, about 30 km further south area is higher and cooler with deep volcanic soils, and has a very different terroir. The most prominent King Valley varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Shiraz, Tempranillo, Durif, Gamay, Traminer, Verdelho, Ruby Cabernet, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Viognier, Mondeuse, Muscat, Zinfandel, Petit Verdot, Meunier, Riesling and White Frontignac. Grapes were first planted commercially in the King Valley in 1882, and by 1891 there were 10 vineyards in King Valley. However the phylloxera disease destroyed many of these early plantings. In 1970 vineyards were planted area between Moyhu and Whitfield.. and this was soon followed by many additional plantings. There are now over 75 wineries and vineyards in the King Valley. The King Valley Virgin Wine, Food and Arts Festival is held at Whitfield each November, showcases the unique wines of the region. The climate is ideal for the production of fine sparkling wine base. Harvest time is generally from Mid March to early May; Heat Degree Days - 1150-1820; Annual rainfall: 670-1400 mm; Mean January temp: 20.6°C; Sunshine hours per day: 8.9.
