Heathcote Wine Region

The Heathcote Wine Region, that occupies the area between the Bendigo and Lower Goulburn Valley Regions, is famous for its premium Shiraz wines. The small towns and villages in the area include: Costerfield, Graytown, Heathcote, Tooborac, Redesdale, Toolleen and Knowsley. The region began as sheep grazing area before the gold rush engulfed and transformed the area and creating the heritage that attracts many visitors to the area. Recently the focus has shifted to wine production. The first vines were planted in the1860s but the arrival of phylloxera in 1893 wiped out many of the early plantings. It was not until 1969 that the modern vineyards began to reappear on the landscape. McIvor Creek Winery, established in 1973 was one of the first winery to be licensed in the area in the modern era. For the most part, the soils are Cambrian - red and deep with excellent water holding capacity. The Heathcote region has a Mediterranean climate with warm dry summers and, usually, mild, wet winters. Temperatures in the Heathcote Region are generally lower than in Bendigo and the Goulburn Valley, and are somewhat higher than in the Macedon Ranges. Two Italians families have lead the development of the excellent reputation of the region. Albino Zuber planted vines close to town. This vineyard has recently been acquired by Shadowfax Winery. Bruno Pangrazio is the Italian inspiration behind the Jasper Hill label, that was first available in 1982. Heathcote is a great region to for enjoying wine tours to its many cellar doors. It is just 90 minutes from Melbourne and is close to Bendigo and Ballarat.
