Gippsland Wine Region

Glenrowan Wine Region includes wineries between Benalla, Glenroan and Wangaratta, and near the towns of Thoona, Peechelba in Central Victoria, west of the Warby Ranges. The Glenrowan Region is one of five wine regions in the North East Valleys of Victoria - group King Valley, Rutherglen, Beechworth and Alpine Valleys Most of the vineyards and wineries with cellar doors are grouped around Glenrowan township in the are situated between Lake Mokoan and the Warby Ranges and make it very easy to enjoy a wine tour through the region. Most of the vineyards are located on the lower slopes providing good drainage. The deep red granitic soils yield intensely flavoured fruit with a unique terroir. The region a wonderful place to visit as there wonderful accommodation facilities, many fine food outlets including orchards, excellent winery cellar doors, restaurants and cafes. Glenrowan is famous as the place where the bushranger Ned Kelly held his last stand. Major local events include the Wangaratta Jazz Festival which is held in November and the Kelly Siege Commemorative Event, which is held in June. There are many scenic attractions and opportunities for bush walking and camping in the area including the Warby Range State Park and Lake Mokoan. Summers are hot, winters cold, with a few frosts. There major features of the region are the extremes of daily temperature between day and night and the four distinct seasons throughout the year that provide ideal growing conditions. There is considerable variations in climate across the region. Glenrowan's wine making history dates back to the 1850s with the planting of Bundarra vineyards by Richard Bailey. The first vintage was produced in 1870. The four generations of Baileys that followed have built a famous reputation for deep and full-flavoured red table wines, including the renowned Hermitage Shiraz, and wonderful Tokays and Muscats. The property has been acquired by Beringer Blass Estates, which has continued the tradition and makes red table wines and fortifieds under the Baileys of Glenrowan label. Another 1800s pioneer was the Booths family whose vineyard and 'Taminick Cellars' winery, are still in family hands. Cliff Booth has played a leading role in establishing the modern reputation of the region as a producer of exceptional grapes and outstanding full-bodied wines.
